IELTS writing task 2 involves essay writing for both Academic module and General Training module. The essay question statement differs for both the modules, but the topics for the essays are same. The essay can be on any random topic.

The tone of the essays varies. There can be some essays which might ask for an opinion about a statement that whether you support it or disagree with it. For instance, foreign visitors should be charged more than the locals on visiting museums and other historical attractions. Do you agree or disagree?

Then, there can be some which ask about advantages or disadvantages of any general topic. For example, advantages and disadvantages of living and working abroad.

Questions can be drafted in a way where problems and causes, or solutions of a particular topic are asked. Besides these, there can be some descriptive questions where general questions are asked which have to be proved in the essay. For instance, why do we need music?

As there is no fixed syllabus for IELTS, so a student should try to practice as many questions on different topics as he can. If the way of executing the essay is clear to the student, then he will not find it difficult to write a 250 words essay in 40 minutes.

Based on the question statements that came in the IELTS exam earlier, few areas such as education, technology, environment, sports, employment, government and crime etc seem to be a popular choice amongst the examiners setting up the question paper.
